IC Information;
Character Name; Katherine "Kate" Beckett.
Canon; Castle: wiki, abc website, unofficial website
Canon Point; post 4x20: Limey
Age; late twenties, early thirties.
House; Heimdall.
Power; Damage Drain.
Personality; Katherine Beckett is a detective with the Twelfth Precinct Homicide Squad, NYPD. And for Detective Beckett, it all comes down to giving others the chance she never had. As a college student, Kate's mother was brutally murdered while she was away at Stanford earning her Pre-Law degree and because of what Kate calls lazy cop work, Johanna's murder was ruled a botched robbery and never solved. Driven by that lack of closure, Kate dropped out of school and joined the New York Police Academy and graduated at the top of her class and is one of the youngest women to ever make homicide detective with the NYPD. Beckett is known in the Twelfth as a closer, taking on cases many detectives would stay clear of due to their complicated nature. Kate's first-hand experience with violent crimes allow her to more easily empathize with the victim's families, and thus fuel her drive to create cases that will not fall apart, not even in court. It's not just a job for Kate, but rather the chance to save others from the pain she suffered, and still suffers.
While working, Kate is serious, driven and fairly intense. She is a force to be reckoned with and can be either your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on your part in the case. But Kate also has a private life, a lighter side to her that is funny and quirky, the side that spent weekends at the local joke shop with her father or read Marvel comics for weeks on end. This is also the girl whose first real car was actually a '94 Harley softail, who spent a semester in Russia during college. She's also a (not so secretive) fan of the famous novelist, Richard Castle, who after a series of very interesting events, ends up consulting with her on a case. Because of his connection with the mayor, they form a very abnormal partnership and much to Beckett's annoyance, soon became Castle’s muse for his next book series: Nikki Heat.
At the beginning of their partnership, Beckett and Castle’s relationship was strained at best. Beckett's more serious approach to crime-solving did not, initially, mesh well with Castle's more unique thought-process. But as their time together continued, she found that their partnered styles led to a very successful string of solved murders. They also formed a very complicated friendship, and by complicated, she actually means that there are some very complicated feelings there that Beckett prefers to ignore. Going as far as to feign amnesia in order to keep their relationship...the same. She's grown fond of Castle, as a friend and maybe even more, and she's terrified of losing that. So much that she will put it off, deny herself those feelings because maybe, just maybe, things will stay the same.
While Kate can be fearless in the line of fire, confident to a T, and efficient to a fault, when it comes to her social life she is much less thorough - preferring friends without strings, relationships without depth, anything to keep her from getting hurt again. Most of her closest friends are those who are constantly in her life - Laine, the corner, Javi and Ryan, the other members of her team, and Castle. Though she guesses that's changed, what with how he's been acting towards her recently. And that worries her, makes her feel self-conscious in ways that she hasn't since college. But she can't let him know that, and while Laine has figured it out on her own, she doesn't really want anyone else knowing. Can't have anyone else knowing. She hides it well enough, though. She's done it for years.

I'm Detective Kate Beckett, NYPD. I was wondering if anyone had any information as to exactly where we are. The woman I met earlier was very unhelpful and this letter is absolutely ridiculous. Do you think this is a game? Kidnapping a cop will get you-
[She stops herself, breathing through her nose for a moment before straightening again. Kate smiles , a bit pained but no longer looking like she's about to rip off someone's head.]
The letter called this place Asgard. From Norse mythology, right? Or the Thor comics? And the woman said something about how my room is in the Heimdall House. I wasn't big on the Thor comics, but he's the guy who guards the rainbow road, right?
And if you see my-
[She stops herself again, this time her lips pressing into a thin line. No. She didn't very much care if Castle was here, besides, he'd probably contact her if he saw this anyway. Or so she hoped.]
Like I said, any information as to what is going on would be great. Thanks.
[And the video cuts out.]
Log Sample; It doesn't go the way she wants it to, in any way, shape, or form, and she doesn't quite know how to react. Laine made a good point, pointing out how Castle has changed. Kate doesn't deny it, but maybe she does a better job at ignoring the way it made her feel than actually admitting it. Maybe Laine's right - maybe he's tired of waiting. Maybe he doesn't want to sit around as she carefully avoids the subject, waiting for him to make the first move without giving him anything to work with.
But she doesn't expect that. Doesn't expect him to...shut her down like that. It was just two weeks ago that he asked to talk, and when she brought it up, he seemed completely unfazed. And when she finally has the time, the energy and the guts and the whole package rolled into one, he completely blows her off. Completely. For a girl that is so Bachelor-Castle she feels like they've regressed back to a part of her she doesn't necessarily want to be anymore. Back when they first met. Back before the freezer and the bomb and the gunshot.
And he doesn't get it. She can't blame him, doesn't really have the right. Not after making him wait this long, turning a cold shoulder every single time he tried to bring it up. She shot him down, cut him off, and now she's paying the price with his...uncaring attitude.
"She just doesn't seem like your type."
Bimbo. Blonde. Easy. Giggly. Shallow. Not me. But she smiles, kind of laughs it off, and the smile he gives back is so...honest. So real and so very Castle it hurts.
"Yeah well...she's fun and uncomplicated. That's what my life needs right now."
And then he's gone, right on out the elevator without even a moment for Kate to respond. No more of those lingering looks, waiting for the other to make the first move. Waiting for that connection. No, he's done waiting. She's made him do it for too long.
Kate looks back over to her desk, realizing that she might have just missed her chance. But not just, she missed it a while ago, and she doesn't understand when. How. What did she do so wrong? She has her suspicions, but she can't be sure, can't pinpoint the exact moment and it's killing her. But then she remembers - the invitation, the denied date - and she sits back down in her chair.
Maybe she shouldn't, maybe she should just do her paperwork and go home.
But Castle's obviously moved on. She's missed her chance. So she picks up the phone and calls the new number, still feelings a little off but who cares. Why not. She's not going to miss another opportunity, not like this.
"Hi, it's Kate. Do you still want to buy me that drink?"
